We’re Going on a Bear Hunt {Storybook Craft}

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, retold by Michael Rosen and Illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, is a beloved classic and one of our favorite children’s books. The kids have fond memories of learning to sing the story with their former sitter and have had it memorized ever since. It truly never gets old, and now they have the pleasure of teaching it to their baby sister!

“We’re going on a bear hunt. We’re going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We’re not scared!”

The beauty of this craft is that it is a quick visual summary of the events that take place on the “bear hunt”. The story begins with a mom and dad with their 4 kids and their dog, heading outside to hunt for a bear. On their journey they overcome several obstacles of nature which include, long wavy grass (swishy swashy), a deep cold river (splash splosh), thick oozy mud (squelch squerch), a big dark forest (stumble trip), a swirling whirling snowstorm (hoooo woooo), and a narrow gloomy cave…

I’ll leave the ending a surprise 😉

There is a great animated version of the book here on YouTube. We “sing” the story at a bit of a quicker pace, clap along to the beat, and use hand motions!

For our “Bear Hunt” craft, I sectioned off a piece of 8.5 x 11 (sky blue) construction paper into 6, 2-inch strips.

I then prepared the different elements in the story for the kids to assemble including:

Both of my kids both loved assembling this craft, and adding their own special touches (it was also their idea to use glitter for the snow. The messier, the better!). I am thrilled with how they turned out! They also enjoyed singing the story over and over while pointing to each section of their artwork.

At the beginning of our school year at home, we learned about horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines as design elements so I took this opportunity to review what the different lines were again. This craft perfectly illustrates all three! So far we’ve been going through this book for our art lessons.

This project has really got me motivated to dream up craft ideas to go along with more of our beloved favorites, so stay tuned!
